Merlin Music Systems using Joule-Electra OTLs was once again a show stopper. The VSMs shared the dark grained cherry finish with the OTLs sitting by their sides; both reminiscent of old Gibson SG guitars. And Bobby Palkovic had a new battery powered BAM on hand. Merlins just get better and better. One important fact I learned in the Merlin/Joule room was that one should never let Super Joe at JPS in while vinyl is playing. In their niche, once again best of the show.

You have all read about the Merlin VSM; with each modification, Bobby Palkovic makes a significant advance in sound quality. The original set the standard for small, floor standing two-way speakers. The RC network which came next was an improvement, as was the BAM, a bass equalization circuit added last year. This year Bobby introduced a battery-powered BAM, and has superior definition to go with his enhanced bass response. If you would like a speaker that contains almost every element of the ideal, but don’t want to give up most of your listening room to a behemoth, and don’t have a fortune to invest on the project - I strongly recommend you try the Merlin. Next year? Bobby may introduce a subwoofer for the VSM, and worry all the other speaker manufacturers: a Very Scary Merlin, indeed.
