RUNNING EIGHT MINUTE MILES AT ALTITUDE:
2007 Rocky Mountain Audio Fest

By H. Richard Weiner

I. OLD FRIENDS AND NEW

. . .  Journalists and manufacturers compare notes. "Who's sounding good this year?" we always ask each other. No one is ever surprised to hear that Bobby Palkovic of Merlin has a nice room, because he always achieves good sound. While others struggle through the night and into the second and third days of a show, Bobby sits back and enjoys himself. This was the first time I heard the VSM in its revised, lead-free MX state, and I have to agree with Marty on every point: this is one of the best speakers available. The fact that it's modest in size and (by today's standards) very reasonably priced ($10,500 to $12,000) is a tribute to the man's intelligence and years of dedication. I listened for a lot longer than eight minutes, congratulated Bobby on his achievement - as did everyone else who came into the room - and departed.

. . .

II. BEST OF THE ROCKIES

As Bill warned me, there were hundreds of displays, many with more than five companies sharing a room. I couldn't give all of them a fair evaluation, but these were my favorites:

Merlin VSM speakers driven by Joule Electra OTL amplifiers, with Audio Aero digital, were superb. All the dynamic excitement of live music was presented without electronic artifact.
