The Best Sound in the show is a tough call this year. Hovland, Blue Circle, Venture/First Sound, and a few others were right up there. But my choice goes to Bobby Palkovic and his Merlin Music Systems VSM-SE loudspeaker, powered by the Joule Electra electronics from Judd Barber. The system sounded very alive, with phenomenal jump and distortionless peak handling ability, coupled with outstanding imaging, transparency and subtlety. The LP source was a VPI turntable with the 10" JMW Memorial arm and a Cardas Heart cartridge. Stan and I really enjoyed SR's Favorites on this system, and I continue to be mightily impressed with the improvements that Bobby is making, the most recent of which is battery power for the BAM active equalizer. Good show, Bobby!
