[TSM LOUDSPEAKER]
THE MERLIN TSM WHITE PAPER

Buying a speaker system is certainly a matter of personal taste. There is not a single product or sound that could ever manage to make everyone happy. Merlin's project development team expresses their own personal taste and convictions in speaker design. Looking into the future has motivated us in a different direction than most. We do not follow the industry's trends in sound and form. Our goal is to design systems with a "sound and appearance that transcends fashion." It is our belief that a heightened sense of realism and timeless appearance will stand the test of time and that trendy products can and will become tiresome.

The TSM is the culmination of one full year of product development from Merlin Music Systems plus years of continus product improvement since the TSM's introduction in 1996. Its user friendly nature is one of its greatest strengths. This will be a very pleasant surprise for those of you that have spent a great deal of time and money trying to get the most out of your present speaker system.

The TSM sounds great right out of the box. They will require only a few hours of play to settle before they sound their best. We thoroughly test and play each pair before they are shipped.

The TSM is very easy to set up. Mount them on a solid metal stand, preferably one that you can fill with sand or buckshot. Stand height should be 20" to 26" depending on your own height and seating (the musical center of the speaker is the point where the woofer and tweeter touch). Place the speakers approximately 7' to 8' apart, center to center. Level the stand so the speakers stand plumb and toe them in 10 degrees towards the seating position. This speaker system is capable of exceptional dispersion. Its lateral imaging and depth can be enhanced even more with thoughtful placement away from walls and furnishings.

The TSM is a very easy speaker to drive. Its flat impedance plot and nominal 8 ohm load allows any amplifier (tube or solid state) to unleash its full potential. The result is a more natural, relaxed and highly resolved presentation. Your system's micro and macro dynamics may also be greatly enhanced. There is one last point to consider, the TSM's sensitivity is 87 dB. This will allow you to select one of many excellent lower powered amplifiers and enjoy fantastic results.

The TSM's cabinet construction, fit and finish, quality of the drivers, circuit topography and crossover parts share much in common with its bigger brother the VSM. These are non production line systems made with many proprietary parts, advanced construction and engineering techniques. In short, maximum attention has been paid to every design detail. Thrift is a consideration only where it will have absolutely no influence on the sound and expense is no object where the sound is concerned. We can best describe our efforts as a labor of love and integrity.

[TSM LOUDSPEAKER]It may appear self serving to try to describe the TSM's sound, but we feel that it is important that you are aware of the speakers "personality."

NATURALNESS / REALISM

The most intriguing thing about the sound of the TSM is that there is not one characteristic that strikes you. The spectral balance is superb, bringing all aspect's of the sound together in an absolutely natural manner. The TSM creates a heightened sense of realism which draws you into the music, involvement is guaranteed.

RESOLUTION / PRECISION

The TSM has an uncanny ability to untangle complex images. It removes the final veil between you and your music.

LATERAL SPREAD / IMAGING

The TSM creates a broad and seamless sound stage that extends well beyond their physical placement. Images are clearly and specifically placed along the horizontal plane.

FOCUS / IMAGE DENSITY

One of the TSM's strongest attributes is its sharp focus. Images are portrayed with great density creating a sense of substance. They seem extremely vivid due to the "blackness" of the background.

MICRO / MACRO DYNAMICS

The TSM's sensitivity to micro dynamics is evident throughout the music and deep into the sound stage. It plays with finesse and texture, even at lower listening levels. The bass is articulate and room filling. Macro dynamics are certainly very impressive especially when you consider the TSM is a mini monitor. They are explosive, unforced and precise. It is as though the TSM has no memory of its own.

LAYERING

The TSM defines the sound stage in an authentic manner. It places sharp images in a precise location across and deep into the sound stage. Each image is portrayed with its own specific ambient information. The contrast in information is what designates their placement. The result is a truly holographic presentation.

We sincerely hope that you audition the TSM. This will give you a chance to experience all this speaker has to offer. You will find that at $2,500 (in out standard Studio Black finish shown) a pair the TSM is certainly one of the smartest and most attractive buys for shrewd music lovers with a good ear.
