Wow! Those new MXe/MMe sound awesome! - As time goes on, we are finding the new RoHS lead-free complaint version of the VSM and TSM speakers are much better than we thought.  We are finding based on our own listening and feedback from customers that they are 20% to 30% better sounding in every manner. They are better sounding not only with tubes, but also now superb with solid state based on what our customers have told us. We have shipped many of these speakers to people using Simaudio, Power Modules (Belles), Mark Levinson, Ayre, Macintosh and even Rega solid state amps, that are having a terrific time with them. They are also more room filling, offer better pitch definition in the bass, better macro dynamics, more continuous sounding, more complete sounding, better focused, higher in resolution but less bright with less distortion and inter-modulation  between images in the stage, more expansive sounding and just plain more natural and real sounding/more inviting to the brain and heart.

Merlin Products Now Meet European Union Lead-Free Content Standards/Requirements - As you may be aware, July 1, 2006 is the deadline for meeting compliance with the European Union RoHS standards for  just about all electronic items sold in the European common market. What has driven these standards is the desire to remove a number of hazardous materials/metals (lead and certain other metals) from the waste streams. With the large amount of computers, cell phone and other disposable consumer electronics items growing significantly in use, this is becoming a significant issue around the world. The European Union is leading the way with these standards and the main effect on the Hi-End Audio Speaker industry is the need to get the lead out (literally!) from our products (drivers, caps, inductors, resistors, solder etc) so we can keep selling our products in European common market countries. This is not the only sole driving force to do this.... as a number of US States and cities are working on or passing regulations that will also require lead free compliance in consumer electronics products in the near future. In order to ensure availability of Merlin products around the world we embarked on a process to ensure we can meet these upcoming standards.

For us here at Merlin, the most important part of this whole process was to protect the integrity and performance of all Merlin speakers to ensure that there is absolutely no sacrifice in the sound quality of our products. Fortunately, our products were already more than 90% of the way there. Driver manufacturers ScanSpeak, DynAudio, and Morel whose drivers we use in our speakers were all on top of the RoHS requirements and have been providing us RoHS compliant drivers well in advance of the July 1 deadline. As well, great companies like Hovland whose caps and inductors we use have been making their products without lead for many, many years. So that left us with some experimenting to do with different lead free solders. Some listening tests quickly lead us to a lead free solder that is only mildly more difficult to work with (minimal impact on assembly time and cost) and also sounds better than the old lead based solder we used! We are extremely happy with the overall results that are archived when all the lead free items are used to build a set of speakers.

To easily identify those speakers which are lead-free products we decided to add the lower case "e" to the model names. So, a lead free TSM-MX will be labeled a TSM-MXe, a lead free VSM-MM will be labeled VSM-MMe, etc, etc. There is NO price increase as a result of this change at this time. Specifications for the speakers remain unchanged as well... they work just as well as before... actually, we think they sound a bit better! All speakers manufactured from July 1,2006 onward will ALL be lead free "e" models.

What about upgrades???? After many inquiries about this, we have looked further at the upgrade question. We have worked out the detailed cost to upgrade previous MM and MX models of the TSM and VSM to MMe and MXe lead free versions and if a customer wants to do it, we will perform the upgrade. For details and cost, please contact the factory via phone or e-mail.

Merlin Super-BAM, VSM-MM/MX price increases and new reviews added - While we never enjoy having to increase prices, the improvements incorporated in the Super-BAM's power supply provides much greater flexibility as the outboard power supply unit now has a detachable power cord, is CE compliant for Europe, and will automatically adjust to operate on most any AC line voltages and frequencies found around the world. The new power supply in the Super-BAM also improves the sound of it when it is used in AC/Charge mode. The Super-BAM has improved charging caps plus superior voltage regulation with a new battery supply that has almost 30% more capacity. The result is that the Super-BAM has better pitch definition in the bass with a more relaxed, continuous and expansive sound.

Due to increased production costs, plus the addition of a new power supply design on the BAM, prices on the Merlin BAM and all VSM speakers systems that use the new Super-BAM have been increased and are now reflected on our Product Pricing Page.

Italy's TNT Audio HiFi Web-zine, has just published a fine review of out TSM-MM loudspeaker. Click here to read the English version of the review on their website (link opens a new window). As well the VSM and TSM have received Bound for Sound Component of Merit awards, which you can read about here.

We also have some really nice new color literature on the VSM-MM/MX models. You can view this literature on line by opening/downloading this Merlin VSM Adobe Acrobat PDF literature file. Feel free to view and print as desired!

Merlin Music Systems VSM-MX and TSM-MX Series Speakers - A production sample of our new VSM-MX loudspeaker was premiered in January at the 2004 CES in Las Vegas. MX versions of the VSM and TSM incorporate revolutionary improvements to the construction of crossover components used in their dividing networks and in the BAM. These changes result in a number of significant sonic improvements over our standard Millennium series. The improvements were clearly audible to the attendees resulting in exciting commentary during the show. The MX series features:

  • Greater resolution without any negative side effects - The VSM’s and TSM’s resolving ability is bumped-up another notch or two without effecting the natural tonal presentation of the speakers.  The speakers sound bigger, more room filling, fleshed out and more direct than ever before.

  • Greater macro & micro Dynamics - The speakers now play effortlessly right up to their limits without strain or congestion. Nuances that were slightly obscured (at all SPLs) are now clearly audible.

  • Even lower self noise than before - There is no doubt that the treble of the Millennium series was pristine and grain free. But a slight haze that was overriding the treble (which was not apparent) has been eliminated. Cymbals and brushwork now take on an incredibly lifelike and dimensional quality. Additionally, the separation of players and the sense of space within the sound stage is more apparent and correct.

  • Greater weight and presence - Complex large scale music (i.e large orchestral works) are conveyed with a greater sense of weight, authority, and presence.

The Magic Mod, MX series, MM series, and upgrade Q&A - We have summarized what we thought would be the most common questions about the new changes in our product line-up in the FAQ listed below:

  1. Will I be able to get my old premium clearcoat finish VSM-M and TSM-M speakers upgraded to MXs? Yes, owners of premium clearcoat VSM and TSM Millennium speakers will be able to get their speakers fully upgraded. This will not be inexpensive, as the upgrade will require sending the speakers back to us, where we will have to completely tear down and then rebuild the crossovers in each speaker.

  2. Can I upgrade my old Studio Black finished VSM-M or TSM-M? For those of you who have studio black finish VSM-M and TSM-M speakers (made prior to April 2004) we have developed the Magic Mod. The Magic Mod will incorporate those MX model changes that work best in the standard Studio Black finished cabinets. Magic Mod pricing will depend on certain factors, so please call or e-mail us for your upgrade cost. Please provide the age, version, and serial number of your speakers when you call or e-mail about Magic Mod upgrades.

  3. So, is the VSM-M and the TSM-M now discontinued? Yes. We are now incorporating the Magic Mod into all new production Studio Black finish VSM-M and TSM-M models. These models are now called the VSM-MM and the TSM-MM. The new retail price for the TSM-MM is $2,800/pair and the VSM-MM is now $7,700/pair (including single ended Battery BAM).

  4. Will the Magic Modded VSM-M or TSM-M sound as good as their MX brothers? No, but they will be clearly better than previous VSM-M and TSM-M systems.

  5. Will upgrades to older VSM & TSM versions still be offered? Yes, but to varying degrees depending on the age and version of your TSM or VSM. Please call or e-mail us for details.

  6. How much do the new MX series speakers cost? The TSM-MX is $3,800/pair retail and the VSM-MX with single ended B-BAM is $10,000/system retail. The speakers come in your choice of any number of high quality premium clearcoat finishes. Warranty on all MX products is 10 years parts and labor.

  7. How long will it take me to get a pair??? At this time (March 2004), we are backordered. Delivery may take 3 months for orders placed at this time. Please call your dealer or Merlin to get an idea on how long it may take to get your pair.

  8. What about the subwoofer system for the VSM??? The development and incorporation of the MX changes into our product line-up (as well as the current backorder situation) has delayed development of the VSM's subwoofer system. Once things have settled down and we have had a chance to catch up on the backorders, we will resume development of the subwoofer system.

That is all for now. As always, feel free to call or e-mail us with any questions that we may have missed out on above.

With the addition of the new MX series speaker, you will notice some changes on various pages to include the MX series info. Up above you will see Merlin products news and announcements added. As well, we have new show reports to added from the 2004 CES and a new review on the VSM Millennium form Enjoythemusic.com. I have a bunch of pictures of the Merlin/CAT/Cardas suite at CES which I will add to the Picture Gallery Page as soon as I get done with other updates. Thanks for tuning in... looks like it will be a great year for Merlin Music Systems. - Rich Brkich, Webmaster

[The Web-Master with his VSMs]Some of you may have noticed various changes to the Merlin Music Systems Website here over the past several months. As the new web-master, I (Rich Brkich) have been gradually implementing numerous improvements and additions to the site. Part of these improvements is changing this page over to more of a news page with information about what has been changed or added to the Website recently along with other company news and events. If you do find something goofy with the Website (besides my picture), please e-mail us and let us know. There is probably some bad links here or there or some great example of my not so great typing ability that needs to be corrected! Here is the list of the most recent changes to the Website:

  • The Picture Gallery Page has been completely revised with many pictures of VSMs and TSMs in various clear coat finishes along with various pictures from our suite at CES.

  • Various 2003 CES show report commentary from print and on-line publications has been posted and can be viewed on the Reviews Webpage.

  • The former contents of this page, which used to contain our description of the latest Millennium series of Merlin loudspeakers, has been moved to a new Millennium Series White Paper Webpage which is easily accessible from the VSM-M or TSM-M Webpages.

  • Work has started on new pages for Tips & Tweaks for your Merlin speaker's and your system, on-line Manuals for the VSM, TSM, BAM, and other Merlin items, plus a fun page that will contain some Merlin PC wallpaper for you true Merlin fans out there!

  • Last year, the telephone area code for Merlin Music Systems changed from 716 to 585. All of the main pages of the site have been corrected with the new area code information. All recent (within the past 3 or 4 years) show report and review Wepages with this info have been corrected as well.

  • The look of the web-site has been cleaned up a bit. I have revised the Merlin logo and have re-organized the Reviews Webpage to make it easier to find various reviews and show reports.
